Krispy Kreme Challenge synopsis
Yesterday I ran the Krispy Kreme Challenge. I actually completed the challenge. The challenge is to run from the NC State belltower to the Krispy Kreme in downtown Raleigh, eat a dozen donuts, and run back in an hour. I didn't have a time goal, I just wanted to finish in under an hour, and I finished in 57:33. For those of you keeping track, 12 donuts is 2400 calories, while 4 miles is 400-600 calories, depending on how much you weigh and what not.
Is this country great or what?
I saw:
- Elvis
- 3 people with T-shirts that said POLICE on the front and had the Krispy kreme logo on the back. They offered to give Elvis a police escort during the race.
- NC State ROTC? Some group of guys doing army chants. On the way to KK it was stuff like "pin my medal to my chest." On the way back, it was stuff like "cold beer."
- At least 15 people with those floaties that fit around your waist and/or inner tubes, decorated like doughnuts.
- Flash Gordon
- Spiderman
- Batman
- Wonder Woman
- some guy with a toolbelt. He had a cutting board on the back of it. I was looking at slideshows later and I saw him cutting up donuts into little pieces on the toolbelt
- 2 prom queens. One of them let out the loudest burp I've ever heard after eating 4-5 donuts. The entire crowd around her applauded.
- a homeless person
- doctors in lab coats
- two guys pushing another in a shopping cart
- a cow
- a Santa with an absolutely enormous orange foam cowboy hat
- 4 guys in a Viking ship
- The Blues Brothers
- The ESPN reporter (who was in a suit also, wearing sneakers). A golf cart was in front of him with his camera crew and what not.
- The Associated Press reporter who covered the race was right behind me while eating the donuts. She got a quote from Sam Lee, who was sitting in front of me eating.
- a chicken
- at least 2 guys wearing nothing but a Speedo
- there were reports of a guy in a gorilla costume but I didn't see.
And for some reason people that didn't want to eat all dozen, runners in the "casual" category, were running back with their box of donuts. Huh? It's not like they are that expensive. Go get some later, whey the are HOT and haven't been sitting out on a table in front of Krispy Kreme getting cold.
For the record, I only saw one person vomit, although there was more on the road. There was a lot less puking that I thought there would be, and apparently everyone noticed it. Last year 1 in 4 threw up. This year was a lot less, and most people are attributing this to the fact that a KK donut doesn't have any trans fat in it now but did last year.
Tips if you plan to run the race in the future:
- The course is pretty hilly, especially coming back.
- According to the website it's 2 miles from the belltower to the Krispy Kreme, but my Garmin says 2.2-2.3. This is important if time is an issue if you ever want to complete the challenge.
- I saw a lot of techniques to eat the donuts. Some poured water in the box of donuts to soften them up and remove as much glaze as possible. Some dunked pieces of donut in water to accomplish the same.
- Most people compacted the donuts in order to eat multiple at once. I found eating 2 at a time very effective. The donuts weren't compacted so much that you had to chew a lot. They were still enough air you didn't have to chew as much and could just swallow. I mean, there are pictures of people that smushed 8 donuts together. OK...
- sip water
- make sure you sit up so you can belch up any air you swallow with the donut
Fallout:
- thinking of donuts makes me ill

From Twitter 02-06-2009
- 20:25:22: Krispy Kreme Challenge in the AM. ESPN will be there. John Belushi's chocolate donus is my inspiration.
- 19:40:35: Why is Perl forgotten? Google has APIs for python and php. It's just the best, most under appreciated scripting language ever.
- 12:28:03: worse unemployment news since 1982 or 1939 (depending on how you look at it) and the market is up. Oh, OK.
From Twitter 02-04-2009
- 19:05:48: Getting spare keys and a lockbox with a combo just jumped in the priority list.
- 10:05:23: I can't share this video enough. http://tinyurl.com/cfxcl8
- 09:05:11: A friend of mine, Cindy, was admitted to the hospital (via the ER)yesterday. Totally sucks.

- 19:43:27 LoudTwitter doesn't play with blogger. Suckage. I did it in Perl in less than 2 hours. I'm going to create a competitor.
- 13:03:43 Since no one likes to go from twitter to blogger, will Jeff's Perl script to upload his tweets to his blog work tonight? Stay tuned...
- 09:22:45 And the sun is out for the 2nd day in a row, a new record or something.
- 08:12:22 Sen. Richard Shelby (R. AL) on CNBC this morning - FAIL.

too much stuff
I have a lot going through my head, too much for facebook.
I like Obama. Really I do. I'm glad to see some of his first priorities is to reestablish the respect of American by closing Guantanamo and ending torture. That all said, his economic team is an epic fail. I'll make this really simple. You don't fix too much debt by issuing more debt. You don't fix too much credit by issuing more credit. We got into this mess because we spent too much money, you can't get out of the mess by spending more. Basically, you don't give an addict more drugs. (I'm not necessarily agreeing with House Republicans. They are playing the political card. I'm sure they'd vote for a stimulus if a Rep. was President. Oh wait, they did in 2001 or so.)
In fact, as a liberal, I'm kind of upset and how rank-and-file the Dems have been toward the stimulus package. It's not that I'm a fiscal conservative, it's that we're missing the mark in fixing the problem. The dam has a bazillion cracks and we're using putty, scotch tape, and chewing gum to patch it. We are just making the problem worse. I think we should embrace the problem that is inevitable. Hopefully I can find some good articles that detail this more and post them.
This winter has been WAY more dreary than last winter. I'm anxiously awaiting the return of the sun on a regular basis.
That's all for now.

the divorce is final
For those of you that are unfamiliar with the drama/saga at my job, please read the entries dating back the last 2.5 months.
Bo & Luke finalized their divorce a week ago. On Sunday night. Bo was going out of town and if there was no agreement Luke was going to start taking things over again.
I was 'fired' yesterday. I now start working for Luke in our new venture. This is pretty exciting because I'm in a real startup environment - only 2 of us - but we already have an existing product we can use to start with. And I can continue working at home which is the best.
So I have been fired. Yay me. The only kicker is that my unused vacation time will be paid out over the next 3 months. So I'm still financially tied to the old company. I definitely don't understand that but...at least there is closure.
We have some options to get funding or partner with new companies which is good in the current environment. Details as they arrive because they will mean some job security.
As for the lab, they have less overhead with one person gone (my boss never really had a salary so I'm not sure how that counts financially). Another lab employee quit. Everyone got their full paychck for October, but backpay is still owed to most.
